VIDEOS OF FINAL DESIGN

FINAL DESIGN

These two images show X-Ray shots of the two
levels in the final scheme.

These are a few images showing off the major
attractions of the building and the design itself.

Above image shows a material sketch I used in
the place of where a painted or photographed
artwork would be placed in the scheme.

The image above introduces us to the spiral stairs
whilst it gives an outline of the space in the lower room.

The image below gives many examples of where my
designed materials have been incorporated into the walls,
the foundations (concrete structure) and in the presentation
stands for the sculptures whilst they link to the overall design.

The above image sows a bird's-eye view of the structure
whilst the image below gives a view of Stelar'c upper gallery
and a few of his famous artworks and sculptures.

THE STAIRS

Here are a few shots of the stairs detailing where they
are situated, their functionality and the aspects they provide
for the viewer in the gallery when they use them.

The stairs add an element to the design and join the
room together, giving a view of the whole upper
gallery as you ascend them to the upper level.

These spiral stairs offer a new dimension to how
the viewer can receive the artworks from many
different angles and thus offering different
perspectives that give a greater appreciation for
the works. It also acts as a spine for the room
and subsequently the entire building, contributing
to the design and also giving optimal functionality.

The material needed to look as if it belonged
in the scheme whilst it also needed to look
as if it were serving the purpose it needed to,
such as if it needed to be strong, the material
needed to look strong to be effective.

DESIGNING THE STAIRS

This process was hard as I needed to create
something that tied in with my overall design
whilst allowing the functionality of the stairs
themselves to still be effective.

I like the notion of stairs appearing to float
and I wanted to implement one of these designs
over a curved rise to really enhance the effect,
whilst also tieing in with the dome-like features
of my overall design.

The spiral staircase was to be used to link the
lower scheme to the central area, whereby the
spiral would enable the viewers to look at the
artworks from all angles as they descended.
It also had the effect of creating a spine for the
building and tied in with the central theme.

DRAFTED SCHEMES

These image show a detailed drafted design for the
scheme used for the two artists Weiwei and Stelarc,
whereby Stelarc was situated in the upper level and
Weiwei was situated in the lower level.

I was pleased with the outcome of the upper level and
common area, where my theme of being drawn towards
the centre of the gallery resinated throughout. I was
unhappy with the lower level however feeling it was
diconnected from the rest of the design and was too
complicated. Changes had to be made...

ROUGH SKETCHES & IDEAS

Here is a few examples of some sketches I used to
help create my designs for the upper and lower schemes.

The 2 artists I felt I engeged with the most were
Ai Weiwei and Stelarc, where my designs for Stelarc
and Weiwei had a central theme which aimed to use
the stairs as a spine joining the two artists together.

My first attempted design is displayed below and
although it is incomplete and fairly basic it inspired
the design I came up with in the end.

A key element to my design is the way you are drawn
towards the centre of the room and the high walls
disconnect you from the outside world.
