FINAL SKETCH-UP MODELS

WATERFALL MONUMENT

Further developed design using linear forms to artificially
depict the movement of water in a waterfall.

The shear size of the structure conveys the quality of a monument
and also the hexagonal shape seen from above the structure, to which
the linear columns extend from, ties in with the design of the cell
monument and the meeting place designed as well.

One of my custom textures was used to materialise the
design to make it almost appear like a natural blue stone
that has been hand-crafted to this specific form.

The blue texture is gives off a blue ambient light in the
cryengine environment and looks quite spectacular at night.

CELL MONUMENT

The repititon of the interconnecting shapes gives
the impression of cells being jioned together and thus
displaying the core concept of biomimicry

The structure is to be placed in a pool that can be viewed
from the meeting place, which coincides with the combined
concept I formed whereby nature is being linked to structures.

A biological form is represented through the monument. Blue
ambient light protrudes from the structure creating a bright luminosity
in the water whilst also linking ideas with the waterfallmonument.

Two custom textures were used to materialise this design -
A brown stone-like material for the more solid forms and a
transparent blue wavy glass to give the appearence of crystals
protruding from the water in the surrounding environment.

MEETING PLACE

The concept behind this was largely focussed on the structure
coinciding with its surrounds whilst also representing the core
concepts emphasised by the two monuments.

The design included many different steps slowly
leading down as a sort of undulating staircase with
many different platforms and areas to view the two
monuments from different perspectives.

Water rapids would be inter-twining in and around the
structure whilst the bottom glass platform would over-look
the pool where the cell monument would be. the middle
platform would act as a position to view primarily the
waterfall monument.

Custom textures were used to represent both a reflective white
surface used for both the larger platforms and the transparent glass
platforms, whilst the brown material was used to reflect the rock
of the cliff-faces that surrounded the structure.

ELECTROLIQUID AGGREGATION

COMBINING CONCEPTS RELATING TO CHOSEN CONCEPTS

ELECTROLIQUID AGGREGATION: “Why still speak of the real and the virtual, the material and immaterial? Here these categories are not in opposition, or in some metaphysical disagreement, but more in an electroliquid aggregation, enforcing each other, as in a two part adhesive.” Lars Spuybroek, [1998] Motor Geometry

TWO CHOSEN CONCEPTS
  • Biomimicry
  • Relationship to lanscape
COMBINED CONCEPT - ELECTROLIQUID AGGREGATION

Linking Nature to Structures...
Inspired by cells and linked to nature, these monuments display elements of the natural and biological forms present within the landscape - whether it be the shapes formed or the relationship to the landform that encompases the structure.

This would be the concept used to shape my final designs...

WEEK 2 - DEVELOPED DESIGNS

DESIGNS OF MONUMENTS & MEETING PLACE

MONUMENT - Crafted to the Landscape

MONUMENT - Biomimicry - inspired by cellular structures

MEETING PLACE - Both concepts used

MONUMENTS & MEETING PLACE
IN CRYENGINE3 ENVIRONMENT

The cryengine3 environment I created was largely focused on a
forest with a large surrounding area occupied by tall forest tress.
The monuments themselves were to be situated on the edge of this
forest and inter-connected or associated with large waterfalls leading
to the ocean below (hence produced over cliffs).

The idea was to arrive via helicopter on the platform and then make
your way to the meeting place, whereby you would view the
cellular monument based on Frei Otto, before proceeding down the
stairs to the glass platform overlooking the monument base on
Elizabeth Diller and her concept of incorporating architecture into
the surrounding environment.

Aspects of the design of the meeting place focused on incorporating
the surrounding environment (e.g. the tall linear extensions associated
in and around the forest tress) whilst also displaying elements
depicted in the two monuments.

This 'Biomimicry' monument was only a draft for the final design
that would multiply and combine the elements used for this design.

The 'waterfall' monument made use of linear lengths to convey
an artificial representation of the water-flow present in the waterfall
that it was linked to - associating itself with (and imitating)
its surrounding environment.

The link between the monuments and the surrounding environment
needed further attention whilst the materiality of the structures was
yet to be developed and utilised in the designs.

FURTHER DEVELOPED DESIGNS

DETAILED PERSPECTIVE DRAWINGS - COMBINING CONCEPTS

Combing the concepts 'weightless spaces' and 'static/stable states',
these sketches aided the development of depth in my sketch-up designs
for week 2, where free space can represent a structure better than any
solid material can effectively...

Combining the concepts 'crafted to surroundings' and 'efficiency',
I discovered the need for more variation in further designs, to not
restrict myself to purely linear forms - as this would restrict my
model's capabilities of co-existing effectively in a natural environment

This sketch, combining the concepts 'boimimicry' and 'natural elements',
actually lead to one of my final designs, not based on these concepts, but
rather incorporating the linear shapes to replicate the flow of water found
in a waterfall - crafted to its surroundings

WEEK 1 - SKETCH-UP DESIGN

SKETCHUP DESIGN - MONUMENT

I developed the concept of 'relationship to surroundings/environment'
further and used some natural elements for the materials of the
structure - with the aim of experimenting with placing an object
in a natural environment and make it looks like it belongs there.

These images show the sketch-up design when placed in my
first attempt at a custom-made environment using cryengine3.
As you can see, it's a bit raw and the object itself doesn't really
connect with the surrounding environment, but this process
provided me with an insight for further design.

EXPERIMENT 2 CLIENTS - CONCEPT AXONOMETRICS

CLIENTS - Concepts Displayed by their WORKS

Elizabeth Diller
  1. Free-flowing, interconnected spaces and programs
  2. Skin/surface and ideas of porosity, depth of field
  3. Specific, crafted relationship to surroundings/environment
  4. manipulation of 'natural' elements as building materials
  5. Use of technology to enhance spatial field
Frei Otto
  1. Efficiency of structure/materiality and space
  2. Experimental and unique
  3. Static/stable states - tensile models as basis for creating aerodynamic undulating forms
  4. Biomimicry - looking to different cell structures as inspiration
  5. Weightlessness and all encompassing superstructures/spaces

6 AXONOMETRICS - EXPLORING CONCEPTS

This sketch was inspired by the form of a waterfall
found in nature and what shape is formed using the
water-flow as a guide for design.

My aim for this sketch was to represent the
concept of weightlessness by creating a shape
that appears to float in some parts.

Solid, stable and still providing inspiration
for further design down the track...

Appears to rigid and linear to arise from
natural processes - thus man-made

This sketch was to be developed into a sketch-up
design for the first week's task to which I would
test the designing process and the program used
to display the design - cryengine3

The idea behind this sketch was to use it as an
element to later be multiplied/copied to make a
larger (overall) structure - therefore using it as
a form of cell or building block...
